Abolfazl Karimi, one of the citizens detained in nationwide protests in November 2019, started his hunger strike to protest his continued detention and unknown fate since Monday, March 16, 2020. He wrote a letter explaining his interrogation and his family’s situation. IRGC agents have beaten him up and pulled out his nails during his interrogations, he mentions in his letter, and emphasizes “Please don’t say IRGC intelligence doesn’t beat up anybody. They are worse than Shemr.”
He was taken to Section 2A of Evin Prison known as IRGC intelligence detention center, after the arrest. He was denied access to any communication with his family. He’s also been threatened that his ill parents may get arrested if he doesn’t cooperate. He was then transferred to Greater Tehran Prison after 50 days of interrogation.
Abolfazl Karimi, son of Mohammad, was born on November 27, 2001. He was almost 18 years old at the time of his arrest, he was the sole earner of his family by working as a laborer. His case has been referred to Branch 1 of the Baharestan’s Revolutionary Court. However, after 4 months of imprisonment, he doesn’t know what may happen next!
In this letter sent to HRNA for publication, he’s explained his condition and ask for people’s support:
“I, Abolfazl Karimi, son of Mohammad, a laborer, have an old mother who suffers from a heart disorder. I am responsible for her wellbeing, and cost of her medical care. I am the only child of the family and nobody else helps the family to make ends meet. I live in the worst financial situation, my father is disabled and unemployed. My monthly income of 1,500,000 Toman was the only source of income for the family. I am currently working in prison as a cleaner. My father can’t work because his leg is fractured and my mom had recently undergone surgery which caused her to be in coma for a month. I was struggling in Section 2A of Evin and was unaware of my mom’s pain. Because they didn’t let me contact my family and was in solitary confinement for 50 days. During interrogations, they threatened they would arrest my ill parents. They also beat me with shocker when in custody of Akbarabad’s IRGC intelligence. They claim I have killed an officer. The officers cracked my head and pulled my toes’ nails. They knocked out one of my teeth by kicking it and in Branch 1 of Baharestan’s interrogation, they forced me to accept the crime. I request everybody not to say IRGC intelligence doesn’t beat up anybody. They are worse than Shemr. I ask people to support us till last minute. I swear we were only protesting against the financial situation and fought for you. Please don’t leave us alone. Don’t push us aside. I’m on hunger strike and won’t eat anything until I’m free.
Abolfazl Karimi / March 16, 2020 / Greater Tehran Prison. “
