Today was no different than any other and Ministry of Health Spokesman announced the daily new cases and other numbers. 1,617 new confirmed patients and 111 deaths during the past 24 hours have been identified.
Iran International death toll: 9,177 which is an increase of 344 in the past 2 days.
Graphs tell a different story from the government narrative of lower cases and better situation. Also different reports show a much higher number of deaths, one of them about 4 times as high. Funny thing is, in the government statistics, the death rate remains constantly around 9%, so they can show off their “fantastic” management skills. However, if you consider other reports and local witnesses’ accounts, the death rate would be anywhere from 17% to 30%.
Jahanpur also said, “More than 700 have died from consuming fake ethanol!” It all started by rumors that Coronavirus could be prevented/treated by drinking alcohol. Some people sold methanol instead of ethanol and poisoned many, killing more than 700. He added, “We have to wait and see what happens. We’re not in the same situation as we were a month ago and hopefully we won’t be here next month.” Showing how well the government have had plans so far and how futuristic they are!
The rest of the press conference was nothing but the usual boastful and arrogant comments about how well they’ve had managed the disease, much “better than the west, especially US.” People are back to their normal activities including graduate degree students are invited back to attend universities from April 19. All experts have warned the wave of new patients, critical and dead cases would swarm into the hospitals.
Coronavirus in prisons remain a big problem. Several deaths have been reported. The Judiciary have not granted leaves to the majority of political prisoners, including the ones arrested in November 2019 protests, despite their own directive. A few of them who were on furlough, were asked to return to prison after a few weeks. Samaneh Nowruz Moradi is one of those. Despite her severe medical condition she’s been summoned to prison. Horrifying condition of Islamic Republic’s prisons is a humanitarian catastrophe.
While many international organizations and officials have been writing articles and letters asking US government to ease sanctions on Iran due to COVID-19 outbreak, not a single one of them has asked the brutal, cruel Islamic Republic regime to let political prisoners go. Quite the opposite of other countries, the regime sees this as an opportunity to massacre its opposition members in prisons. April 11, they hanged Mustafa Salimi after he was handed over to IRGC by PUK security forces.
While the Islamic Republic regime is hiding numbers, lying about everything, begging and threatening for sanctions relief, and killing political prisoners, Iranians are dying of poverty and regime’s mismanagement and corruption.
