Hospitals and their staff are overloaded with staggering number of COVID-19 patients. According to National Task Force Spokesman, 18 provinces are experiencing an upward trajectory and 7 are in steep uptrend! Dr. Raisi admitted compliance with the protocols is at 61% which is not enough. East Azerbaijan officials report “critical” situation in the province, Seman records continuous increasing number of COVID-19 deaths in recent weeks, Khuzestan hospitals are full and Dezful officials say all metrics are on the rise and Abadan Medical College admitted there is no light in the end of this dark tunnel. Hamedan says hospitals are filled with patients and predicts 2 more dreadful weeks ahead, Qazvin officials warn about increased fatalities next week. North Khorasan hospitals are filled with patients.
Despite all those reports, Ministry of Health Spokesperson admitting 48% increase in COVID-19 deaths during last week from the week before and hospitalizations increased by 17%, National Task Force announced night curfew is lifted across the country during Qadr nights (May 1, 3, 5) and crowded gatherings are allowed. Eid Fitr Prayers are also permitted, even in red and orange areas, considered coronavirus “high risk.”
In the meantime, Indian coronavirus variant, which is much faster to transmit and much deadlier than other known variants due to its 2 mutations, is the top concern for medical professionals and health experts! After about 1 month that India has been grappling with this variant, Islamic Republic Interior Minister announced banning all traveling and cargo from India. However, the Ministry of Health has stopped sequencing samples and providing numbers for specific variants weeks ago, which increases the chances of Indian variant entering the country undetected, and even the officials are aware of it, it will be denied as long as possible.
Vaccination remains a mystery in Iran. Spokesman for the “Execution of Imam Khomeini’s Order” responsible for COVIran Barekat, claimed 91% of recipients in the third phase of its clinical trial have shown “enough antibodies to protect them against coronavirus.” This metric would be a new invention to determine efficacy of a vaccine. Meanwhile, Ministry of Health announced only 741,994 shots have been administered since February 9 and 157,258 have been fully vaccinated. That is 0.18% of Iran population.
Ministry of Health Spokesperson claimed 374 died of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours in Iran while 18,230 tested positive for the novel coronavirus. The daily reported numbers have been widely criticized since day one and even Iran Medical Board officials admit the real figures are at least 3 times higher. Daily PCR tests remain in the same range. ICU admissions continue to rise while active cases reach a new high every day, as seen on the graphs.
