Saturday and another National Corona Combating Task Force meeting, presided over by the Islamic Republic President, Hassan Rouhani. Like all other meetings, there was no real change or plan but repetition of the same rhetoric. “Follow health protocols” and “adapt yourself to living with the virus” as even if there’s a vaccine, the next year it might appear in another form. Apart from that, he lied with straight face about how people thought with a few weeks of lock down everything would be fine! While in fact it was him who thought so and his “next Saturday everything will be fine” became a national and international meme! He said that in March, and 5 months later, the country is struggling even more than the beginning of the outbreak!
Rouhani also touched base on two hot topics: Konkour and Moharram. He said why should we postpone Konkour when everybody goes out on the streets! Two days ago, he refrained from going to the parliament to speak for his nominee for Minister of Industry, Mine & Trade, because he was advised against it due to COVID-19 risk. But more than 1million students taking an exam is no problem, and even though his Minister of Science had asked for 1 month time to prepare everything properly, Rouhani denied it!
Considering 25 of 31 provinces are in critical condition, hospitals are understaffed and shortage of masks continue to be a problem, the President of National Task Force says Moharram mourning ceremonies must be kept alive and people should attend, of course, there is a catch: “by following the protocols.” That has been the scapegoat for the regime’s officials for the past 6 months! None of their “protocols” have worked, and everything has gotten worse, why this one would is beyond logic or common sense! Iranians have a new term to describe these meetings and Rouhani’s speeches: “Speech Therapy,” because there is nothing practical about them and nothing changes!
In the meantime, Ministry of Health Spokesperson announced 2,245 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 161 deaths in the past 24 hours. The fatality rate remains at 6.2% and Basic Reproduction Rate (R0) at 1.43 which indicate the ongoing crisis in the country. Graphs and the stats based on data provided by Ministry of Health are widely scrutinized and proved to be undercounted many times, but still show not even a few days of flat curve in the past 6 months! However, graphs also show the attempts by officials to make the stats go down due to Moharram approaching, August 20.
