Iran Coronavirus February 16, 2022 – Delayed Response, Storm of Infections & Flawed System

34.6% increase in COVID-19 cases in Iran from last week. Expert criticizes the regime for its "delayed response" to Omicron and rebukes the flawed "coloring system." Another calls the current phase, "storm of infections."

“The slow and delayed response to Omicron has caused the sixth wave of COVID-19 in Iran keep on uncontrolled,” Dr. Souri, an epidemiologist, said. He criticized the government for ignoring all the signs for more than 2 months and using a flawed system to “color the map!” The said coloring is based on hospitalizations per 100,000 while many do not even test for COVID-19. Dr. Souri admitted Iran has no active case finding plan and low number of tests would never show the real number of cases in the country. He added, the peak of the sixth wave would probably be higher than previous waves. According to undercounted and manipulated data of the Ministry of Health, infections have increased by 34.6% from the week before.

Secretary of Immunology Board of Iran and a member of COVID-19 Scientific Committee expressed his “regret and worry” about 3-digit daily deaths in the country. He called the current phase as “storm of infections stage” and urged the government to ban all gatherings to control the worsening sixth wave. Islamic Republic, on the other hand, insists on in-person classes in universities and schools, “Fajr Film and Music Festival” are ongoing and religious gatherings have no restrictions. But state-media continue to blame people for low compliance with “protocols,” and travelings in Persian New Year holidays 1.5months before it even happens.

In Mashhad, children 1-5 years old comprise the largest group of children admissions in hospitals. Dr. Jafari said children with respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms are considered COVID-19 with Omicron. Mashhad Medical University reported more than 1,000 ER visits in the past 24 hours. Dr. Tabarsi, head of Infectious-diseases ward at Masih Daneshvari Hospital in Tehran, said children are more involved in the sixth wave because schools are reopened! He confirmed the cases and hospitalizations are on the rise and daily death toll could even go higher in the next 2-3 weeks.

Fars recorded more than 2,400 visits to clinics, Ardabil continues the uptick in hospitalizations, 19 have lost their lives in 24 hours in Alborz with rising infections and admissions. Tehran cemetery recorded 200 daily deaths yesterday with “45 from COVID-19!” Hamedan announced 10% increase in admissions to hospitals compared to last week. Ahvaz, capital of Khuzestan, experienced 5 times surge in cases. An Ahvaz hospital confirmed its ICU beds are full.

According to official definition of “full vaccination” and Ministry of Health data, since February 9, only 21,689,655 (25.82% of Iran population) are vaccinated against COVID-19 with these vaccines. It is estimated that more than 53 million Iranians are at risk of contracting Omicron. The majority of shots used in Iran are the ineffective Sinopharm and COVIran Barekat. WHO recommends 3 doses of Sinopharm to be effective against Delta but studies have found the vaccine ineffective against Omicron.

The Islamic Republic “Supreme Leader” banned the relaibale US and UK made vaccines, leading to tsunami of deaths during Delta wave. Khamenei promoted his foundation’s shot, COVIran Barekat, which failed miserably. Multiple “homegrown” vaccines, including PastoCoVac, COVPars, Fakhra, Noora, Spikogen, never met the expectations and none of them has published their results or received recognition/approval from international health organizations. WHO even warned about fake AstraZeneca shots used in Iran. The Ministry of Health denied the report saying the international health body meant the “black market doses used.”

The Ministry of Health Spokesperson claimed 185 have died of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours and 16,310 tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Number of daily tests performed in the country continue to decline despite experts advice to have a more active case finding. Active cases soar and critical patients reach a new record. Professor of Epidemiology at Tehran University believes these numbers must be multiplied by 7 and Civil Registration Organization data show more than 320,000 have died of the disease since February 2020.
