Mashhad joins the list of critical cities across Iran. Mashhad Medical University official said they are not optimistic about a decline in COVID-19 hospitalizations as cases have “increased significantly.” Dr. Qolyan admitted the fifth wave, dominated by Delta (Indian) variant, is way bigger than the previous ones and its rise is “notably accelerated.” Mashhad City Council member reported the death toll has doubled compared to two weeks ago! Tehran hospitals and field hospitals are so filled with patients that many from the capital and Alborz are going to Qazvin for admission, according to Qazvin Medical University. Head of the university warned that is unacceptable and must do “something about it!”
Isfahan, another metropolitan area in Iran, announced more than 2,000 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, breaking records. Isfahan Medical University Spokesman rebuked the government for not doing enough to control the crisis! Arash Najimi warned if nothing is done, the healthcare system will not be able to handle the flood of patients. Shiraz Medical University reported a 2-month infant and a 2-year-old’s deaths due to COVID-19 in Fars province. According to Dr. Lotfi, head of the university, the spike in cases is extremely worrisome. Hormozgan reiterated the same concern and Spokesperson for the medical university said Delta variant continues to grow! Gilan and Mazandaran continue to struggle with their crises while Islamic Republic officials continue to neglect the most basic COVID-19 restrictions and their implementations.
On the other hand, Saeed Namaki congratulated an IRGC terrorist, Javad Foroughi, who used to kill Syrians, for his gold medal in shooting in Tokyo, instead of delivering on his promises about COVID vaccination. The Health Minister keeps claiming all eligible Iranians will be vaccinated “soon” while “vaccination” is defined as 1 dose of Sinopharm or COVIran Barekat for the majority. The two vaccines that are practically useless for the elderly, especially against Delta and possible new variants.
According to the Ministry of Health, total of 10,026,628 shots have been administered in Iran since February 9, while only 2,372,016 (2.82% of population) are fully vaccinated. While 1.1million AstraZeneca vaccines have arrived from Japan yesterday, the required doses for herd immunity seems way out of reach in near future in Iran, especially considering Khamenei has banned US and UK made vaccines, trumpeting homegrown vaccines which are at best a Chinese knock off.
Ministry of Health Spokesperson claimed 259 died of COVID-19 in Iran in the past 24 hours and 18,632 tested positive for the novel coronavirus. The official data have been dismissed by experts and Iran Medical Board believes the real numbers are at least 3 times higher than the daily reports! Critical cases continue to rise while daily PCR testing remains below 70,000, as seen on the graphs.
