Islamic Republic officials repeat their claims about COVID-19 and its vaccination in Iran. Health Minister asserts there have been days with 170,000 administered doses of vaccines and this number will reach 500,000 soon. He promised Iran will be one of the first countries to finish its vaccination by March 21, 2022 (end of Persian Year). He described coronavirus epidemic in Iran much more difficult than the 8-year Iran-Iraq war, saying those days there was some money in the treasury but these days it was empty! He also claimed during the fourth wave of coronavirus less people died compared to the previous waves. He continued to praise his work and said “we will be one of most renowned countries in COVID-19 vaccination.” He spouted off that’s when people can resume their Friday Prayers and religious gatherings freely! It is worth noting, religious gatherings were not cancelled during the epidemic in the past 15 months!
According to the Ministry of health official data, the highest daily administered doses has been 161,032 on May 16. Since February 9, only 407,519 (0.48% of population) have received both shots of a vaccine (Sputnik V, AstraZeneca, Covaxin and Sinopharm). In the meantime, a total of 2,571,160 doses have been administered!
Dr. Alireza Raisi warned about the South African and Indian strains in the country, claiming all cases have been spotted and immediately quarantined. The National Task Force Spokesman emphasized the most dangerous is the South African one because vaccines do not have any impact on it, a claim that contradicts real world data from Israeli study pointing out Pfizer is highly effective against the strain. However, Khamenei has banned importing of vaccines made in UK, US and France.
Dr. Tabarsi, head of Infectious-disease ward at Masih Daneshvari hospital in Tehran, claimed even if one dose of any vaccine is administered, the chain of coronavirus spread will be broken. In his interview on national TV, he did not cite any scientific study. Tabarsi’s statement further confirms IranTrue’s speculation that Islamic Republic officials consider even 1 shot as “fully vaccinated” when talking about their vaccination goals and “phases.”
On the other hand, in a hospital in Shahr-e-Kord, capital of Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari province, 90 doses of Sputnik V were wrongfully injected to the healthcare staff. According to reports, even though the first and second dose vials are colored differently, first dose is blue and second is red, 90 first doses were used instead of second ones. Officials claim there is not going to be any complications while there is no data available in such cases. Unlike other COVID-19 vaccines, first and second doses of Russian Sputnik V contain different ingredients.
Ministry of Health Spokesperson claimed 310 died of COVID-19 in Iran in the past 24 hours and 13,930 tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Sima Sadat Lari did not provide detailed variant information. The daily reports of Ministry of Health have been scrutinized since day one and even Iran Medical Board officials admit the real numbers are at least 3 times higher than the reports. As graphs indicate, the fourth coronavirus wave is far from over, despite Saeed Namaki and other officials’ claims.
